Haven Gastropub's Truffle Mac & Cheese

Thanks to Yelp, I decided to try Haven Gastropub in Orange. What lured me in were comments recommending the truffle mac & cheese and the candied bacon ice cream. The idea of the truffle mac has been stuck in my mind ever since seeing a Top Chef contestant create it in an early season (I think it was "I'm not your bitch, bitch" Dave). I don't ever really crave mac & cheese, but weave in some truffles and it's a whole new deal.
The portion is perfect, though the dish is a bit pricey ($10). It's not overly cheesy, but it is more peppery than expected. And nutmeg is definitely a pleasant surprise. My only wish is that it had a more intense, distinct truffle flavor. But it was very satisfying. So much so that I didn't have room for the bacon ice cream. Guess I'll just have to go back for that.
But an unexpected treasure was a snippet of conversation from a table over. One young woman said quite matter-of-factly: "Some people go to amusement parks. I go to restaurants." Cheers to that! (Photos from iPhone)
