For Super Bowl Sunday, the big question was to try jambalaya/gumbo (in honor of the Saints) or the standard chili. I was all set to honor the Saints until Ray saw the Los Angeles Times'Bowl of Red. Once I saw the photo, I was convinced, too. Chili it would be. Many, many hours later.
It took way longer to cook than I expected, and the flavor wasn't as intense and multilayered as I thought it would be -- especially with six different chiles AND bacon, which became a paste that was delicious by itself.
The one good thing that came out of it was that I'm pretty intrigued with using different types of dried chiles now and will try some new recipes -- and roasting them over an open flame before blending them was a thing of beauty.
For whatever reason, the flavor was disappointing, especially for the amount of time it took to make. So, jambalaya's next on the list. The Saints didn't need my help anyway.
